to me that seems like he didnt put the clip in the properly and just the vibration of motor caused the pin to slip and shattered the pin holder then completely grenaded piston

People saying the previous owner didn't install the retaining clip, he did, if he can rebuild it himself he knows about a retaining clip...but he probably put it in vertically or it accidentally spun enough which allowed it to expand and pop out while under pressure... turn it the opposite way and it'll only get tighter while under pressure. I've seen many clips pop off because of improper install. It doesn't help when the bike is idling to the absolute moon before ever giving it throttle, on a brand new engine with no heat cycles. It's far better for no idle at all and just leave the throttle open enough to keep it from stalling, than it is idling like that... turn it to where it doesn't idle, then turn the screw just enough until its just on this side of stalling, you do not need a high idle. It sounded terrible before it ever grenaded. He revs the piss out of everything, doesn't matter if it's new or not, cold start or hot, just wide open continous blips or idling super high while also giving it wide open blips. I've yet to hear a properly tuned crisp 2 stroke on the channel, yet every time, "it sounds perfect" noooo... I either hear it being way too rich or detonating. Like this he said sounded great, no it didn't. He's a great mechanic and good at diagnosing issues, without a doubt, but jetting and knowing what a properly tuned bike sounds like is not it.. jetting from a piece of paper will get you in the ball park, the fine tuning is done by ear.

Excellent video! I pulled an RD400 out of a shed in Vermont last fall. A little rough on the eyes but it turns over and everything is there. It will be on the lift in a couple of weeks

Instead of searching for a used crank assembly, how about trying one of the crankshaft rebuilders? I would be intrested to see how they compare in price, and I suspect that a good machinist could provide a better than OEM unit.

Great stuff and I’d agree re the gudgen pin (as we Brits call it ) came loose after the circlip came loose . I have seen a piston loose like this when riding Enfield in the Himalayas . On one that was running rough the crown of the piston had broken away from the body of the piston !! It ran badly but was fixed by putting a new piston in . Those bikes are tough , which is what you need in those remote areas . Love your stuff

I see how this can happen , but wow even with only one keeper she blu fast with no signs of heat at all , I forgot a keeper on my 78 rm 125 once my very first top end rebuild but made it most of the first tank before she let go lol ,got away with bore job and new piston ,

Dang, you paid $875 but also got a transmission with that as well right? I would say that’s a real good deal however I like all new parts so I know for sure such as the crank and all the goodies.Im guessing you know how to measure if that lower bearing is good,average or bad. It would just seem better to put all new bearings in it so you get many years out of it. Also I’m new to this and rebuild truck diesel engines and wondering why you can’t remove the rod and bearing and replace it? Do they not make them to rebuild?

You should call the seller and see if he has the old crank if you can't find a new one

What a video! You have a great attitude as well towards seeing something that can be devastating. I hope you had the funds to rebuild it because at this point you would have a new engine that would last many years. I sure hope I can find a video of you putting it back together

You should of never ran it after hearing the noise. Should of tore it down. Could of prevented this bud!! Looks like one of the c clips wasn't locked into place fully an dude installed it like that an left it an it backed out when u started to ride it an broke the housing where the wrist pin goes in an that's all she wrote

Please make sure you clean everything. All those little pieces of metal will slowly grind away a new build.

New top end and bottom end…right, red flag when seller says that. Cranks shot, let’s slap in a new piston and sell. 😂

Rod was not straight and stressed the wrist pin lands. A missing circlip would have let the pin walk over and mill the cylinder wall. Faulty rod from the beginning. It doesn't take much for this type of damage to occur. The pin cannot move out far enough to do this since the piston would have to clear the cylinder first.

either they didnt put in one wrist pin clips or it wasnt seated properly and the pin slipped out and broke the piston. human error NOT a defect parts failer.

In a lot of your videos you make me nervous trying to get old plugs out or chain tension bolts work them in and out with lube on them to help wet the under lying threads instead of just cranking full force out on them

The fail is the person that built the engine. They left the clip off the wrist pin and it backed out and completely destroyed the engine. Smh. Rule of thumb. Check behind others work because you cant really trust other people's work. Some skip stages that will cost and complete engine to get destroyed like this one. Smh. Sorry you had to go through thus Joe. Sad!!! Smh

5,600 miles is a lot of miles on it. No it's not. 100,000 miles is alot of miles on it. But I seen motorcycles get 200,000 miles. If you take care of it and don't beat the crap out of it!

I don't get how Joe didnt think that awful rapping noise was anything? It sounded awful. That noise had to have something to do with it locking up

Put a 41mm FCR Kehein carb on it and a FMF pipe and ride it like you stole it. I had a '95RXC 620 was a great bike after I took off the POS Quicksilver carb. Have fun don't over tighten the chain needs 3 fingers from chain guide.

Just a idea for you. Buy you a shipping container to keep your toys in at home. It's far cheaper then buying a building and lasts longer then anything you could purchase to store your things. They go for very good deals and that includes shipping them to your home. Plus you won't have to worry about storage fees and all your things will be at home at hands reach. Just a suggestion that will pay off in the long run and I have gotten one for 2500 with it being shipped to my home. So something to think about buddy.

If you are rebuilding it. Make sure you put a proper length vent hose on the vent on the back of the valve cover. The older Hondas (not sure if it’s still on newer Hondas) that vent uses the motors pulse to vaporize oil to help lubricant the top end. If it’s to short or not on there at all it will pull dirt in through that vent and ruin the top end.

I’ve seen snow machine cranks bearings fail and the pistons caught and ripped the wrist pin out if the piston

Unless the big bore is cheaper, don't do it, you are unlikely to make enough more to make it worthwhile.

When something is stuck as hard as that engine cover, USE AN IMPACT! You are far less likely to strip it and far more likely to get it free with an impact!

I picked up a non-running 2001 Polaris 6x6 kind of on a whim a few years ago. I mostly just thought it was cool but it has been an absolute workhorse. I use it for just about everything around the yard, I don't want to imagine life without it now
